“There was no gas cylinder in our home; our family was torn apart by an explosive blast, yet police arrived only the next morning.”

The Pandi tragedy and official question marks

Just 12 kilometers south of Bagh city in Pakistan-administered Jammu Kashmir, a horrific tragedy occurred in the village of Pandi, leaving a big question mark on the performance of the administration and the police. On Thursday, October 29, that mysterious explosion claimed the lives of four members of the same family, but the most shocking fact is that the place where this destruction occurred, was barely half a kilometer away from an established police checkpost,

yet the law enforcement agencies did not arrive in time to help. This destroyed house belonged to a poor laborer, Shaqdar Khan, who had been residing in Karachi for the past three years for employment purposes. This tragic incident swallowed his mother, his wife, and two innocent children. Immediately after the incident, Deputy Commissioner Bagh claimed in his stance that a grenade incident had occurred in the village of Pandi, where contingents of security forces were dispatched, and according to initial suspicions,

there were reports of the presence of terrorists in the area. But the question arises: why was prompt action not taken despite such massive destruction occurring right under the nose of the police post? Meanwhile, that same night, a flyer attributed to Prime Minister Iftikhar Gilani was circulating on social media,

which read: "The deaths caused by the gas cylinder explosion in Bagh Pandi— shameful propaganda about them is a vile act and is a matter of concern regarding the narrative of the Public Action Committee." Salma Begum, an eyewitness who arrived first at the scene of the incident, tore apart this narrative of the administration, and recounted the horrific story of that night, which was heart-wrenching. That day, the sound of an explosion came... My name is Salma. That day, between 6 and 7 o'clock,

the sound of an explosion was heard. When we arrived, there was a lot of smoke, and dead bodies were scattered around. Among the deceased were my grandmother, aunt, and cousin. In that house, they used wood; gas was not present in their house at all. It was a very terrifying scene. Our aunt was unrecognizable; her face, arms, and legs were not there at all.

Eyewitness account by Salma Begum

Her flesh was searched for and put into shopping bags. There was blood on every side. All the utensils had holes in them. Grandmother was injured on her head, from which blood was flowing. The little girl didn't have shoulders at all. Everyone had holes in their bodies. The injured cousin was lying unconscious outside the kitchen. We thought the house caught fire; we shouted: "Leave the house and get outside, let it burn."

I shouted, "Get out of the house, let it burn!" On the other hand, the nephew of the affected Shaqdar Khan, Basit Ali, brought all the claims of the administration and the police to the dock, uncovering the facts. These are my relatives, aunt... Among those killed in this incident are my grandmother, my aunt, and my aunt's children. In this incident, four members of our family were killed, while a girl was injured.

This incident occurred around 7:00 PM. I was on duty, and after having dinner, I called home as usual. My sister picked up the phone, but due to her voice and crying, I couldn't understand anything initially. Later, I found out that an accident occurred at home in which members of my family were killed. After some time passed, I was told that something exploded, as a result of which my grandmother, aunt, and their children were killed. One girl was injured,

who was taken to the hospital in Bagh district. Since her condition was more critical, she was transferred to Muzaffarabad. The next day, when it was time for the burial, I arrived at the scene of the incident and inspected the kitchen of the house. There were small holes everywhere on the walls. The utensils present in the kitchen also had holes visible on them. From this scene, it could be guessed

that a very severe incident had taken place there. On social media, regarding this incident, various things were being said. Some people were declaring it a gas cylinder explosion, while others were giving other reasons. However, it was not clear to us what actually exploded. Our uncle used to work as a laborer in hotels and tandoors in Karachi; they belonged to a poor family, and they did not even have a small gas cylinder. People living in our neighborhood can also testify to this.

Some time after the incident, a video of the kitchen went viral on Facebook. That video was made by someone who was present there. No member of our family made that video because at that time, our condition was very bad. According to me, that video clearly shows the holes present in the kitchen walls and utensils. I believe that to find out the real cause of the incident, these evidences should be properly investigated. A proper investigation should be done on these holes...

Where a poor family was mourning the corpses of their loved ones, on the other hand, the state of police absconding from responsibility was such that SSP Bagh, Amir-ud-Din, while performing his customary responsibility in his statement, indeed said that explosive material was placed inside the house, and investigations are underway. But no answer was given as to why the police arrived with such delay. Another close relative of the affected family exposed this irresponsible attitude of the police,

stating that when he arrived here in the morning, around 6 or 7 o'clock, I first asked if they had called the police. The family members told that they had informed the police at night, but the police said that they could not come at this time because they needed security. When I arrived here in the morning, for the first time, I arrived around 6 or 7 o'clock. So I confirmed, "Did you call the police?"

So they said, "We called the police at night, and the police said 'We cannot come right now, we need security.'" And police arrived around the next day, around 11:00 or 12:00. Because at that time, at night around 7:00, the incident occurred, and from that time until the next day around 11:00 or 12:00, the police did not arrive. They arrived around 11:00 or 12:00. This horrific incident that occurred right next to the police post in the house of a poor laborer

is a huge question mark on the security and response of state institutions and district administration. When the police and administration failed to provide protection to citizens and continued to adopt a non-serious attitude even after the incident, to whose mercy should the public leave themselves? The affected family is still awaiting justice and a transparent investigation. Pakistan-administered Jammu Kashmir, District Bagh.
