News report on British Parliament discussion on Rawalakot
Assalamu Alaikum, I am Mahpara Kashmiri from Jammu Kashmir TV. Addressing the British Parliament, Sajid Hussain highlighted the human rights situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He demanded a United Nations fact-finding mission to investigate the situation in Rawalakot and alleged violations. According to Sajid Hussain, Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir should be released immediately. He emphasized the implementation of the 4th October 2025 agreement and meaningful dialogue.
He said that peaceful demands should be met with justice rather than violence or coercion.
Sajid Hussain addresses British Parliament committee
Thank you, honorable Member of Parliament, Fabian Hamilton. Distinguished members of the Parliament, respected ladies and gentlemen, good evening. I would like to draw your attention to the deteriorating human rights situation in Pakistani-administered Jammu and Kashmir, where people are peacefully demanding their fundamental rights, social justice, and democratic freedoms. Demanding fundamental rights is not a crime, and peaceful protest must never be met with violence. On 5th June 2026, according to the reports from the rights movement,
Pakistan's Special Services Group attacked a convoy associated with Sardar Umar Nazir Kashmiri, a core member of the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee. The situation deteriorated and a curfew was imposed in Rawalakot. The people faced pressure to abandon their legitimate demands, but they will not surrender their rights, dignity, or peaceful struggle for justice. Since then, the rights movement has reported more than 100 people martyred, 1,000 injured, and 1,000 detained or abducted.
Among those reported killed are Commander Farooq, Nazaqat Khadam, Shahzaib Habib, Fahad Barkat, Usman Nazir, and Dr. Osama Jameel. These reports demand independent investigation and accountability. We extend our heartfelt solidarity with JAAC and people of Jammu and Kashmir. We offer our deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of all the martyrs. We call for the return of withheld bodies, information about missing persons,
and the release of Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee leader and core member Shaukat Nawaz Mir and all those arbitrarily detained. We urge the authorities to implement the agreement of 4th October 2025 and address the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee charter of demands through meaningful, peaceful dialogue. The continuing internet and mobile communication blackout, alongside reported restrictions affecting food, medicines, and healthcare, has created serious humanitarian concern.
We demand the restoration of communication, access to essential supplies, and the withdrawal of additional paramilitary forces, where their deployment is contributing to tensions. So we respectfully call on the British government and the international community to support the independent United Nations fact-finding mission to Azad Jammu and Kashmir to investigate reported human rights violations and promote accountability. So thank you so much.
In an address at the British Parliament hosted by MP Fabian Hamilton, diaspora activist Sajid Hussain highlighted the human rights situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on unrest and state crackdowns in Rawalakot. He called on the British government and the international community to endorse an independent United Nations fact-finding mission to investigate alleged abuses. Hussain condemned the use of force against peaceful demonstrators and demanded the immediate release of Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir and other detained activists. He also urged authorities to restore suspended mobile and internet networks, ensure supplies of food and medicines, withdraw additional paramilitary units, and implement signed agreements through peaceful dialogue.
Analysis
Source and framing: The report is published by Jammu Kashmir TV (JKTV) and covers an address by activist Sajid Hussain in a committee room of the British Parliament. The framing focuses on civil liberties, prioritizing the public grievances and rights movement against administrative and security measures in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Fact-check: The speaker cites specific casualty counts, crackdowns on rallies, and detentions of Joint Awami Action Committee members around Rawalakot, as well as an official agreement between protesters and authorities. While extensive public agitation and law enforcement actions in AJK in mid-2024 are confirmed by independent media, exact casualty and arrest figures cited by political groups remain unverified due to localized curfews and communication blockades.
Kashmiri perspective: For residents across Azad Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Poonch and Rawalakot, the speech reflects deep dissatisfaction with administrative apathy, suppression of peaceful civic demonstrations, and recurring telecommunication blackouts that disrupt daily life and fundamental livelihoods.
Across the line: The restrictions described—including preemptive curfews, communication shutdowns, heavy paramilitary presence, and the detention of civic leaders—closely mirror the administrative tactics long experienced by civilians across the Line of Control in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Rights and democratic freedoms: The video highlights serious civil liberties concerns, notably the fundamental right to peaceful assembly, freedom of speech, arbitrary detention of activists, and communication blackouts that impede access to medical care and basic survival needs.
Voices missing: The piece conveys the grievances articulated by the Joint Awami Action Committee and diaspora advocates, but does not include official responses or explanations from the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government or Pakistani authorities regarding the security operations.
Editorial takeaway: Sustainable peace across Jammu and Kashmir cannot be achieved through excessive force and administrative blockades; authorities must respect democratic freedoms, release political detainees, and honour public commitments through transparent dialogue.
