Address to Mothers and Youth
Today, I am addressing all the people living in Azad Kashmir, addressing the conscious youth of Jammu and Kashmir, the children, and our mothers who are living across this state of Jammu and Kashmir, and who are witnessing this oppression with their own eyes. Because a mother knows the pain of every child, because the way a mother raises a child, only a mother can understand what state she goes through when her child is separated from her;
the mother who raised her children with so much pampering, love, and hard work. Similarly, across the entire state, our youth, the sons of those mothers—nearly 115 those young sons who were snatched away from their mothers, from the father's head the shelter... the shelter of the son was snatched away, the father's protection over the son's head was snatched away, and similarly, there are many women who have been widowed. These oppressive forces have martyred unarmed people in large numbers.
Sacrifices for Basic Rights
In this context, the people who were martyred, they were martyred for my and your basic rights. They died for my and your education, for our employment across this entire state of Jammu and Kashmir, for better healthcare, for employment for youth, for justice in the state of Jammu and Kashmir; they made sacrifices. This movement is for basic rights. Keeping those sacrifices in mind, I appeal, I appeal to every single household, that every household, tomorrow on November 9th, on Monday,
every household, in the evening, light lamps in their homes. In every home, prayer ceremonies should be organized for them. Every household, even if there are just two members in the house, even those two members should come together, light lamps and appeal for prayers for them, and share it on social media, and tell the entire world that the mothers of the State of Jammu and Kashmir, and the youth here, the sons here, the parents here,
every segment of people living here who possess human empathy,
Call for November 9 Vigil
all the casualties that forces have caused, against this [injustice], and for those martyrs of truth, for the elevation of their ranks, they will definitely remember them. I appeal for lamps to be lit in every home, and a prayer ceremony be held for those innocent souls. Thank you very much.
Khawaja Mehran Advocate, a core member of the Joint Action Committee in Azad Jammu Kashmir, delivers a video message addressed to citizens, youth, and particularly mothers across Jammu and Kashmir. He highlights the sacrifices made during popular rights movements, claiming around 115 young people have lost their lives to state force while demanding basic rights, employment, education, healthcare, and justice. He describes the grief of bereaved mothers and families whose loved ones were taken from them. In commemoration of these victims, he appeals to every household to observe a symbolic vigil on Monday, 9 November, by lighting lamps in their homes and offering collective prayers. He urges citizens to share these tributes on social media so the wider world remains aware of the community's grief and ongoing struggle.
Analysis
Source and framing: The clip is published by Jammu Kashmir TV (JKTV) and features an address by Khawaja Mehran Advocate, an activist with the public Joint Action Committee in Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK). The framing is centered on popular resistance, public grief, and tribute to those killed or impacted during protests for socio-economic and political rights. State authorities and police actions are described through the lens of public victimhood and state heavy-handedness.
Fact-check: Khawaja Mehran claims that approximately 115 young men have lost their lives to state forces during civil rights agitations across the region, leaving behind grieving parents and widows. While serious confrontations and fatalities during recent rights agitations in AJK (including the electricity and subsidy protests) have been documented, the specific figure of 115 across recent incidents remains an unverified estimate by the movement and lacks independent official confirmation. His call for a household vigil on Monday, 9 November, reflects actual campaign messaging by the committee.
Kashmiri perspective: The address speaks directly to the lived grievances of ordinary families in AJK who bear the brunt of civil unrest and economic strain. By focusing on the emotional pain of mothers and fractured families, the message connects everyday economic demands—affordable utilities, healthcare, employment, and justice—with broader public dignity and communal remembrance.
Across the line: The pattern of civilian grief, state crackdowns on popular demonstrations, and families seeking acknowledgment for fallen or detained youth resonates strongly on both sides of the Line of Control. In Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, mothers and families have similarly engaged in symbolic vigils and community protests against heavy security measures and civilian casualties.
Rights and democratic freedoms: The video underscores basic democratic freedoms, including the right to peaceful protest, assembly, and freedom of expression. It directly challenges the use of disproportionate force against unarmed citizens demanding civic and economic rights.
Voices missing: The video consists entirely of a single speech from a rights activist. It lacks responses from local administration and law enforcement authorities regarding the alleged incidents and casualties, as well as direct interviews with the affected families themselves.
Editorial takeaway: The call for peaceful remembrance and candlelit vigils highlights how grassroots movements in AJK continue to seek non-violent, symbolic means to articulate grievance and sustain collective memory in the face of administrative pressure.
