“You cannot solve basic public issues through force; authorities must resolve civic grievances through dialogue.”
Protest slogans outside the Pakistani Consulate
1, 2, 3, 4, occupation no more! 1, 2, 3, 4, occupation no more! 1, 2, 3, 4, occupation no more! Were the dying wayfarers singing praise for the nation and homeland goons? Were those passionate soldiers who rose carrying the nation's flag goons? O leader of the nation and country, lift your eyes, meet our gaze.
Let us also listen, tell us as well, whose blood is this, who died?
Speaker outlines grievances and JAAC support
Our purpose of gathering here outside the Pakistani Consulate is currently... ...the ongoing movement for civil rights in Azad Kashmir. Over the past four months, more than 100 of our people have been martyred there by Pakistani forces. Thousands of our people are missing, and besides that, thousands are injured. In Jordan, and wherever Muslims are, you oppressed them... ...and played with blood. [Someone has] come to stop this,
and our mayor, New York's Mayor Mamdani, also speaks of these things. Allah Almighty will bring forth these people of His, and God willing, we will be in the majority here as well.
Denunciation of force and reported Poonch unrest
Today marks five months... ...that in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistani forces... ...have reached the extreme of cruelty and brutality. Unarmed Kashmiri people are being openly shot, and for the past week, for three days, Kashmiris are being martyred and injured through drone attacks.
So, standing here, we want to convey this message to the international community: become the voice of Kashmiris. Kashmiris have always raised their voice for other oppressed nations too, and today when atrocities are being committed against them, no country, no institution has... ...come forward to strongly support us yet. And to the Pakistani rulers and Pakistani forces carrying out killings there, we also want to send this message: no issue is resolved through force.
Sit down with our people, sit down and have discussions, and resolve their fundamental rights through negotiations. And you will see that the unrest and anxiety inside America,
Call to the international community and conclusion
Insha'Allah, these very people will transform it with peace. And I want to say again, Asim Munir Sahab, there is still time, step back, stop this oppression of yours, otherwise a day will come when your fate will be just like General Zia-ul-Haq's.
Members of the Kashmiri diaspora held a protest outside the Pakistani Consulate in New York against alleged state crackdowns and rights abuses in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (Azad Jammu Kashmir). Protesters carried banners demanding the release of political prisoners, including Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir, and chanted slogans condemning state oppression. Demonstrators condemned reported police firing, heavy-handed measures, and alleged recent drone strikes in the Poonch and Rawalakot areas. Speakers called on international human rights bodies to take notice and urged Pakistani authorities to address civic grievances through dialogue rather than force.
Analysis
Source and framing: Jammu Kashmir TV (JKTV) broadcast footage of a Kashmiri diaspora demonstration staged directly outside the Pakistani Consulate in New York. The framing strongly reflects the perspective of the protesters, focusing on their outrage over security operations, arrests of civic activists, and governance grievances in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (Azad Jammu Kashmir).
Fact-check: Speakers make grave allegations, including assertions that over a hundred people have been killed in recent months and that drone strikes were deployed against civilians in Poonch and Rawalakot. While independent human rights groups and international media have documented lethal clashes, mass arrests, and tear-gas deployment during JAAC protests in AJK, figures claiming over a hundred deaths and the tactical deployment of armed drones against civilian populations remain unverified by independent sources.
Kashmiri perspective: The footage highlights the acute concern among diaspora communities regarding civil liberties and living conditions in Azad Jammu Kashmir. By focusing on fundamental civic demands—such as affordable electricity, food subsidies, and political freedoms—the event demonstrates how local economic and administrative grievances have galvanised political mobilisation across borders.
Across the line: The heavy-handed suppression of public demonstrations, detention of political figures, and curbs on dissent reflect systemic governance failures observed on both sides of the Line of Control, mirroring similar patterns of security-centric control in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Rights and democratic freedoms: The protest underscores critical civil liberties, notably the right to peaceful assembly, freedom of speech, and protection against arbitrary arrest. The demonstrators' central demand—the unconditional release of detainees and accountability for reported civilian casualties—aligns with core international human rights conventions.
Voices missing: The report exclusively documents the speeches and slogans of the protesters; it lacks any formal statement or response from the Pakistani Consulate, administrative officials in Muzaffarabad, or security authorities to address the specific allegations raised.
Editorial takeaway: Sustainable peace and civic stability across Azad Jammu Kashmir cannot be secured through force, detentions, or administrative coercion; only genuine, accountable dialogue that respects basic human rights and public aspirations can resolve longstanding grievances.
