Casualties and funeral announcement in Rawalakot
Assalamu alaikum. Today, the situation in Rawalakot has been very tense and the conditions are still very critical. Around 30 people or more than 30 people were injured. Three deaths have been confirmed here at Umar Farooq Chowk. The martyrs' funeral... they haven't been buried yet. Insha'Allah, tomorrow at 3 PM, their funeral prayer will be held here in Dreik. Furthermore, an emergency appeal is made to the entire Kashmiri nation, alerting everyone to take to the streets in their respective cities and protest.
And whoever can—this was decided by the Core Committee—whoever can reach Rawalakot, should reach here immediately.
Call for student and public mobilisation
There is another appeal regarding protests, that all students must also actively protest. Especially the students of Mirpur University, Kotli University, and likewise Muzaffarabad University, because you are our valuable asset. The struggle we are carrying out here is for your future, a struggle for the future of our children, a struggle for our future. So I also strongly urge all young people to definitely register their protest tomorrow. And not just register protests, but also come here to Rawalakot from different places and show them that the entire Kashmiri community still stands with the Action Committee.
Allegations of drone attacks and diaspora appeal
And this brutality—look at how people are being massacred with drones. Drone strikes... we have never heard in Kashmir's history, meaning from 1947 till today in this so-called Azad Kashmir, of anyone ever launching a drone attack. Yet here, drone strikes have started. So you can imagine the extent of this brutality, what massive oppression and injustice is taking place. An appeal is made to everyone to protest vigorously, and to all our overseas people, we request you to also register your protest.
Organize the sit-ins everywhere even more effectively, and bring the attention of the international media to this place. Thank you very much.
A representative on Jammu Kashmir TV reports on intense unrest in Rawalakot, Azad Jammu Kashmir, stating that at least three people were killed and around thirty injured during clashes at Umar Farooq Chowk. He announces that funeral prayers for the deceased are scheduled for 3:00 PM the following day in the Drake area. Speaking on behalf of the Joint Awami Action Committee's core committee, he issues an urgent appeal for citizens, youth, and university students from Mirpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad to take to the streets and travel to Rawalakot. The speaker accuses authorities of unprecedented brutality, claiming without independent verification that drones were deployed against protesters. He concludes by urging the Kashmiri diaspora to mobilise demonstrations and attract international media attention to the unfolding situation.
Analysis
Source and framing: The clip is broadcast by Jammu Kashmir TV (JKTV) and features an appeal directly from an activist representing the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) in Rawalakot, Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK). The framing is defined by public resistance against state authorities, highlighting acute grief, outrage over civilian casualties, and defiance against heavy-handed policing. Loaded terms such as "barbarity" and unverified allegations of "drone attacks" reflect heightened emotional distress during an escalating confrontation.
Fact-check: The speaker reports three fatalities and about thirty injuries at Umar Farooq Chowk, which aligns broadly with independent reporting of violent crackdowns on JAAC demonstrations in May 2024. However, his assertion that "drone attacks" were carried out against protesters in Rawalakot remains unverified and likely conflates surveillance drones or tear-gas-dropping quadcopters with lethal drone strikes. The announcement of funeral arrangements reflects confirmed local ground organisation.
Kashmiri perspective: The footage captures the intense public anger in Azad Jammu Kashmir over civic rights, inflation, electricity tariffs, and state suppression. By explicitly invoking students from universities in Mirpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad, the speaker underscores the collective nature of the agitation, framing the JAAC's socio-economic demands as central to the survival and dignified future of younger generations across the region.
Across the line: The deployment of state force and crowd-control measures against civilian demonstrators in AJK mirrors the long-standing restrictions on public assembly, tear-gassing, and policing tactics experienced in the Kashmir Valley and Jammu. In both divided parts of the territory, public grievances regarding governance and basic rights frequently face administrative curfews, police crackdowns, and internet shutdowns.
Rights and democratic freedoms: The reported casualties point to serious human rights concerns regarding the use of excessive, lethal force by law enforcement against public protests. The right to peaceful assembly, freedom of movement, and student participation in civic advocacy are directly threatened when demonstrations are met with live ammunition and sweeping administrative blockades.
Voices missing: The video only presents the activist's immediate plea. Absent are statements from hospital administrators regarding the exact cause of death and injuries, responses from AJK police or civil administration regarding the conduct of the security personnel, and neutral eyewitness accounts of the specific clashes at Umar Farooq Chowk.
Editorial takeaway: The deadly escalation in Rawalakot underscores the urgent need for authorities in Azad Jammu Kashmir to halt excessive force against protesters and address legitimate socio-economic grievances through genuine dialogue rather than coercive crackdowns.
