“Mohi-ud-Din Teaching Hospital in Mirpur offers critical dialysis, paediatric surgery, and emergency services, highlighting the persistent demand for accessible healthcare in Azad Jammu Kashmir.”

Introduction to Mohi-ud-Din Teaching Hospital

The dream envisioned by Pir Sheikh-ul-Alam Alauddin Siddiqui Sahib exists today in the form of this hospital. His successor, Pir Dr. Sultan Arfeen Siddiqui Sahib, is carrying this mission forward day and night with dedication. I, Brigadier Dr. Muhammad Ilyas, consider myself extremely fortunate to be part of this great institution. I have a vision that here, patients should receive not just treatment, but also confidence and comfort.

My treatment is going very well, thanks to Allah. Today is my third day. The doctors and staff are very cooperative. They are helping me in every way. And I am an extremely poor man, sir. Yes, I am fully satisfied. I am a very poor, destitute man. Not a single penny or thing of mine was charged. And I thank Allah. The staff and people here are very cooperative, treating patients with great love and sincerity.

Assalamu Alaikum. My name is Dr. Raza Abbas, and I am serving as the Deputy Medical Superintendent at Mohi-ud-Din Teaching Hospital. This is our hospital's main reception. Any patient who arrives first comes to this main counter. Coming to this main counter, they provide their basic details. The patient or whoever accompanies the patient provides their name, their national ID card, and we generate a unique address, a unique MR number for them.

Now, after being registered at this counter, they specify the department where they wish to get examined.

Emergency Department and Critical Care

For example, if it is an emergency patient, they will go to Emergency. If someone needs to see a urologist, they will go to the urologist. If someone needs the medical department, they go to the medical department. Now, based on their ID card, we generate a slip with their MR number, their age, and their MR number will be generated. If a patient does not understand something, for example, if a patient thinks they have both a medical issue and a surgical issue, and wonders which doctor to consult, we have a facilitation desk

where a staff member is stationed. That staff representative guides the patient on what illness they have and which department they should visit.

Our first department is the Emergency department, where any patient with an emergency arrives. In this Emergency, we handle almost every kind of emergency, and our staff is available 24/7. In our emergency setup, we have a crash cart where all emergency medications are available. If a cardiac emergency arrives, we can handle it. If a patient arrives in shock, we can manage it. If someone arrives with trauma, we can deal with that. All emergency medications used worldwide are present in this crash cart for us.

Whatever emergency arises, our staff and medical officers are highly trained to utilize this crash cart.

Dialysis Centre Facilities and Capacity

I am Dr. Professor Dr. Zaid Syed, surgical specialist. I have been working here for the past 3 to 4 years. We monitor patients who come in with acute emergencies to manage them promptly. From a surgical standpoint, we perform many surgeries, including laparoscopy, as well as other operative procedures like thyroid surgery, stomach, intestines, and similarly, if someone has swollen veins, we perform that as well. Mashallah, Alhamdulillah, here our outcome in terms of patient satisfaction is very good,

and likewise, the complication rate among patients here is very low. My name is Dr. Nadeem. I am a Professor of Medicine and head of the Medicine Department. In the Emergency, medicine patients are around 8 to 10, but overall emergency patients are much higher in number. In our OPD, around 80 to 90 patients visit us in the OPD, and in the indoor ward, currently around 20 to 25 patients are admitted.

This is our Dialysis Center. It was established in 2023, and we have performed over 4,000 dialyses at this center. We can show you inside. We have six dialysis stations available here,

Outpatient Department and Paediatric Surgery

and on a daily basis, in every session, we perform dialysis for about six patients. We have done over 4,000 dialyses in three years. Whether it is Eid or any other event, even then, we operate double shifts—morning and evening—performing dialysis in both. Moreover, if someone requires emergency dialysis, our nephrologist Dr. Umar is present, our staff is available, so we can perform emergency dialysis as well. For dialysis, we have a proper RO plant installed. It is not just about the machine; there is a proper RO plant behind it.

Consider dialysis as life for the patient. A patient with end-stage renal disease relies entirely on dialysis for survival. If they miss their sessions during the week, survival becomes difficult.

My name is Muhammad Shafiq. I bring my brother here for dialysis. The treatment is good, and he is improving significantly, Inshallah, Alhamdulillah. Good work is being done. Every week we ensure at least two dialysis sessions for every patient, and if needed in an emergency, three sessions. Under the Sehat Card facility, some patients are receiving free treatment. Our staff is always present, with both male and female staff available around the clock. My name is Laiba Rasheed, and I work here as a Dialysis Technologist. Our center has been open for about three years,

and we have performed over 4,000 dialyses so far, mostly emergencies. We also facilitate patients who require urgent dialysis and cannot find it elsewhere.

This is our OPD block. Here, consultants from various specialties are present. They are available from 8 AM to 2 PM, from Monday to Saturday. General Surgery, General Medicine, Urology, Orthopedics, Paeds Surgery, Rheumatology, Cardiology, different departments are present here, and consultants are available daily in this OPD block. Our daily outpatient count is around 400 to 500, and sometimes 600 to 700 patients visit OPD, mostly from surrounding regions: Jhelum, Dina, Kotli, Chakswari, Mirpur, and the adjoining belt.

Pathology Laboratory and Blood Bank

And every type of patient is attended to here. In the OPD block, this is the room of our Paediatric Surgeon, Professor Dr. Saqib Ismail, who is the only paediatric surgeon in this region, across Mirpur Division and Bhimber Division. No other paediatric surgeon is available, and he serves here. We will now interview him.

My name is Dr. Saqib Ismail. I am a Professor of Paediatric Surgery at Mohi-ud-Din Teaching Hospital, and Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery at Mohi-ud-Din Medical College. Paediatric surgery is a sub-specialty of surgery, and we are blessed that in our area, Mohi-ud-Din Teaching Hospital has a Paediatric Surgery unit, where we provide our services. Paediatric surgery normally deals with children from newborns up to 12 to 14 years old, covering all surgical diseases.

Mostly these are congenital conditions, congenital abnormalities that we treat, and then problems arising later in childhood, including routine trauma and abdominal issues. For congenital abnormalities, I am specifically a sub-specialist and have been performing this duty for the past three years at Mohi-ud-Din Hospital.

Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging Services

I have performed more than 2,000 surgeries here, which previously were not available in this region, requiring patients to travel to Lahore or Islamabad. In that sense, Mohi-ud-Din Teaching Hospital and Medical College is a fine tertiary care unit serving people not only in my field, but across many other super-specialties where doctors are dutifully serving the community.

My name is Dr. Sadia Samad and I am a histopathologist in the Mohi-ud-Din Teaching Hospital Lab. In this lab, almost all tests related to chemical pathology, hematology, microbiology, and immunology are performed. Under chemical pathology: LFTs, RFTs, blood sugar, renal profile including urea, creatinine, thyroid hormones, thyroid profile, FSH, LH, testosterone, insulin levels, vitamin B12, and tests for malaria and dengue, which are epidemic and common in Pakistan, especially during summers, are diagnosed here.

In hematology, we perform cross-matching. We also have a separate blood bank headed by Dr. Shakeela. In that blood bank, donors are available on demand, and our medical students have their blood cross-matched and stored. Whenever an urgent need arises, the blood bank facilitates, and our donors provide blood.

My name is Brigadier Irfan-ul-Haq. I am a radiologist and Professor of Radiology. I have been working at Mohi-ud-Din since 2014, so it has been about 12 years working here. Alhamdulillah, I have had a great experience here. We have X-ray, ultrasound, mammography, fluoroscopy, CT scans, all kinds of facilities available at high standards. Our equipment is in excellent condition, and our staff is highly qualified. Besides myself as professor, we have an assistant professor, a registrar, medical officers—a complete team of qualified professionals.

You can judge that across Mirpur, there are only two, or three including me, FCPS-qualified radiologists.

Medical ICU and Inpatient Wards

Out of those, two of us are here: myself and Dr. Maimoona. The third FCPS radiologist is currently working at DHQ. Elsewhere, radiologists are mostly MCPS or in training. Alhamdulillah, we offer services at very reasonable rates. In the market, ultrasound costs between 2,000 to 2,500 rupees, whereas here we charge 800 rupees for ultrasound, and 1,000 rupees for Doppler,

Medical Superintendent on Administration and Expansion

while in the market Doppler costs 3,000 to 3,500 rupees. At our place, right now, the Emergency Department, which is the face of every hospital, remains functional 24/7. Due to our qualified team, our quality of work is excellent, Mashallah. Where whichever patient arrives, they are provided with initial and immediate medical assistance. Similarly, we perform mammography and sono-mammography. My colleague Dr. Maimoona is fully qualified. And after that, when their doctor examines them, after discussing with consultants,

the patients who need to be admitted are admitted to different departments of the hospital. We provide best results and reports. Patients who had undiagnosed breast cancer were diagnosed here, and their treatments are underway. The difference between us and other hospitals is that, an operation that costs hundreds of thousands of rupees there, here, with very minimal charges of 15,000 rupees, Alhamdulillah, their response has been very good. Similarly, we have a fluoroscopy unit for barium studies and other procedures.

or even 7,000 rupees or 3,000 rupees, the operation is performed. Apart from this, in wards as well as in the laboratory, if any patient wishes to avail a discount, we provide them with those facilities too. It is the only fluoroscopy unit in the area, available right here with us. Patients also come from DHQ for urinary tract studies like MCU, cystography, and retrograde urethrography. Our hierarchical system is such that, a medical college is also attached to us, so we have our resources, and we haven't faced any difficulty so far.

Also hysterosalpingography tests on fluoroscopy, and barium studies are done here. And we do not feel any trouble in running the hospital. Loopograms, fistulograms—all these fluoroscopy tests are handled here as we have the sole unit in the area. Thanks to Allah a hundred thousand times that we have never faced a shortage of funds. We have a total staff of 429 people, Private practitioners also refer their patients to us, and we are serving the people of this region very well.

including 29 consultants, we have 25 medical officers. Besides, we also have senior registrars and registrars working here. House job doctors as well, because our hospital is attached to a medical college, that is why we also have facilities of house job doctors available. My name is Dr. Amra Rafi. I have been working as a Medical Officer in the Medical ICU for the past two years. Apart from this, the biggest advantage we have here is the nursing college.

Because after completing their education from here, our nurses who undergo training here, Here, critical medicine department patients are treated and managed. we have the facilities of those nurses available here. On-call doctors are available at all times: one senior doctor and one junior doctor on call 24 hours a day. Our hospital is a 500-bed teaching hospital. Here, equipped with all modern equipment, especially our operation theater,

In case of any complication, we consult with our seniors and provide appropriate treatment. where the best facilities are available, and apart from that, the most important thing is laparoscopic surgery. We have expert doctors available for it, and patients are treated in a timely manner. In addition, the facilities we are providing to patients in gynecology, if someone comes to us for a C-section, we are providing patients with free facilities for gynecological operations.

Right now, as our patient volume continues to increase, we have an expansion program for this. Besides this, we have to construct an OPD block here. In addition, our... because medical and surgical allied departments are already established, but we have to further expand them. So for that, our plan is to construct its fourth floor as well, so that the best facilities are available to the patients. I am extremely grateful to the community that we have their complete support, and they have full trust in us.

I am deeply grateful to them from the bottom of my heart. In the end, I would like to say about our respected doctors, nursing staff, and paramedics, that due to their day-and-night hard work, this hospital is making continuous progress, and my prayer to Allah Almighty is to make this hospital a center of healing.
